Another Successful Pub Crawl
Despite a couple of glitches -- such as the NASCAR exhibit blocking the streets in Westport -- our 19th annual Jazz Lover's Pub Crawl on June 22 was a big success.

Financially, we did a bit better than last year, which means that we can once again make donations to music-related charities. We will announce those donations at our September 21 meeting at the Mutual Musicians Foundation, and we will invite the recipients to attend and discuss their work.

A couple of new stops on this year's Crawl, the Downtown Marriott and Minsky's Rivermarket, told us they were pleased with the new people the event brought into their clubs. And Tim Whitmer at the Phoenix declared that "this was the best Pub Crawl ever." That's always good to hear.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You
We cannot ever properly thank those who make the Pub Crawl possible. First, without the participation of the clubs themselves, we would have no Pub Crawl at all! There were 20 clubs this year. Please remember these fine venues when you are entertaining friends and associates.

Also, a big tip of the KCJA hat to our sponsors, most of whom support us every year. We were pleased to have the Boulevard Brewing Company as a new sponsor this year. And thank you to our radio sponsor, Hot 103 JAMZ, as well as the public radio stations who assist in promoting the Crawl.

And the musicians. This town is the home of many fine jazz and blues musicians. We hope that you enjoyed hearing performers you may not have heard before.

And last, but certainly not least, are the volunteers who helped with Pub Crawl planning as well as at the clubs on the night of the event. We had a record number of helpers this year. And you will find their names listed in this issue of JAM. It is our special way of saying, "thank you."

It is also once again festival season, and we had excellent help from the volunteers at both the merchandise and beverage tents at the recent Blues and Jazz Festival.

Also, a special thank you to those who took care of our membership tables at other area festivals, including Corporate Woods, Topeka and St. Joseph.

MEAF
What is MEAF? That is our Musicians Emergency Assistance Fund. MEAF is not a very sexy sounding name, but we are quite proud of the help we have been able to offer musicians over the years because of it.

MEAF has taken care of musicians' housing and other living expenses, doctor and hospital bills, and sadly, burial expenses for some of our dear friends. Our "Battle of the Saxes" program on August 17 (a KCJA monthly meeting night) is a benefit for the Musicians Emergency Assistance Fund. We won't have our regular meeting that night -- just an outstanding musical event for a good cause. You will be reading more about this in JAM and in the press.

Remember: August 17 at 8:00 p.m. at the Grand Emporium. Hope to see you there.

And don't be bashful about making an extra contribution to the fund.
