Looking Ahead to the Fall
Sad to say, the summer jazz festival season is over. But it was an enjoyable season, and one in which I was happy to make many new acquaintances and friends at the different festivals and events.

As we turn toward fall, there are numerous concerts and other jazz activities, most of which will be well publicized in this issue of JAM as well as in Whole Notes, our monthly newsletter. (By the way, former KCJA president Vanessa Barnard does a real nice job organizing the newsletter and getting it out on time.)

Pub Crawl Donations
As you know, our annual Jazz Lovers Pub Crawl in June was successful once again. And we are happy to be able to make donations of some of the Pub Crawl profits to sister organizations for their jazz programming and educational projects. This custom began years ago and we are able to continue it again in 1999. Recipients of these donations were selected by the Board of Directors and they received their gifts at the September meeting. Donations were made to the following organizations:

  • Paseo Academy's Jazz Band to help defray the cost of their participation in the Duke Ellington birthday celebration in Washington, D.C. last spring.
  • The South Overland Park Rotary Club to support their Youth Jazz Band for high school age musicians.
  • The KC Blues and Jazz Festival and its "Soul School" program for budding young musicians.
  • The Folly Theatre Jazz Series, which brings the best national and international jazz talent to Kansas City.
  • The American Jazz Museum/18th and Vine Authority, which continues with their respective jazz education efforts. (The second annual Charlie Parker Symposium is being planned for March of 2000.)
  • The Musicians Emergency Assistance Fund. The Board also made a donation to our own MEAF, the fund we use to help needy musicians when possible. (In the past, the Jazz Ambassadors have housed, cared for and unfortunately, buried some of our beloved local musicians.) The Board also recognized the efforts of Kansas City Jazz International who requested that their donation be contributed to the MEAF. Thank you KCJI for this very generous gesture.

Volunteer Appreciation Night At Club 427
Mark your calendars and come join us on Thursday, October 14, at Club 427 in the River Market. Club 427 is helping us to recognize all the folks who worked so hard during festival season. Come on down any time after 5:30 p.m. and make sure you wear your Jazz Ambassadors badge. You will buy your first drink, but your badge gets you a second one free. Also, Club 427 has an excellent menu, and Angela Hagenbach and Joe Cartwright are the featured performers that night. We really do hope that you will join us.

Nominations Committee
Officers and directors are elected every year at the December meeting. And Joyce Johnson is the Chairman of the Nominating Committee. Please contact Joyce if you are willing to serve on that committee or if you would like to be an officer, director or committee/sub-committee chair. Her phone numbers are 333-0987 and 210-5441.

Volunteers Needed!
Dean Hampton needs help updating phone numbers in JAM's Music Mart section. If you can volunteer, contact Dean at 455-1628 or e-mail him at dhampton@sound.net.

The Membership Committee also needs help selling memberships at upcoming fall events. Call Jerry Voss at 229-8909 (e-mail: jvoss@hobbs.leesummit.k12.mo.us) to volunteer.

And your president would like to hear from anyone who would be interested in developing a member communication network (i.e. calling tree). Please call me at 333-1113 or e-mail: mfitzgerald@vomer.com if you would like to get involved.

I hope we will see all of you at the many concerts, benefits, clubs and, of course, our monthly meetings.

In the meantime, have a jazzy fall!
