Spread the Word!
I don't want to sound like a cranky five-year-old, but: IT JUST ISN'T FAIR!
Think about it. It doesn't seem fair that we don't share this excellent organization with more Kansas City music lovers! After all, the KCJA is now the premiere jazz support group in town. Here are just a few of the reasons why.
- We have interesting monthly meetings featuring guest speakers like Angela Hagenbach, Joe Cartwright, Lisa Henry, Ron Rooks, Lee Kavanaugh and Calvin Wilson.
- There are many opportunities to volunteer -- and have a lot of fun by doing so.
- The Annual Jazz Lover's Pub Crawl (sm) each June (when being a volunteer is just as much fun as being a "crawler") and the Kansas City Blues & Jazz Festival in July (where it's a blast just to be in the KCJA booth) are highlights of the Jazz Ambassadors' year.
- It looks like we are going to play a role in the festivities leading up to and including the March 27 unveiling of Robert Graham's new Charlie Parker statue.
- And, we hope to have our own event in the fall to further support the Musicians Emergency Assistance Fund (M.E.A.F.).
So yes, belonging to the Kansas City Jazz Ambassadors is a most enjoyable way for a Kansas Citian to support local jazz as well as community causes.
This year the new Jazz Ambassadors Board is going to make every effort to give all members the opportunity to participate, not only in the many events, but on our various committees. The '99 Board includes Gayle Sherman, Executive Vice President; Jerry and Katie Voss, Secretary couple; and Joyce Johnson, Treasurer. Syd Alleyne is our Director in Charge of the Pub Crawl, and, as in the past, Mary Ellen Farney is our Director in Charge of Special Events (including the mini pub crawls). Vicki Rolff returns as our Board member in charge of merchandise, and Wayne Davis will coordinate all volunteer efforts. Jennifer Vizina is in charge of Public Relations, Darrell Hoffman is our Membership Director, and Dean Hampton is our Director of Communications. Dean will continue to assist in the publication of our well known Jazz Ambassador Magazine along with its editor, Mike Metheny. Also in '99, Don and Barbara Mathewson are the representatives to our Board from our Kansas City Jazz Workshop Division. The KCJW puts on six excellent concerts a year with the profits going toward scholarships for deserving young students of jazz.
Again, in 1999 the Kansas City Jazz Ambassadors will continue to offer great opportunities for your friends and acquaintances to either dip a toe into the Kansas City jazz scene or jump in with both feet. Encourage them to join us and to participate in the lively Kansas City jazz community
Let's spread the word!
