VISION OF A JAZZY TOWER
Or: Can a 900-Foot KC Landmark Become the World's Largest Sax?

In 1983, engineer and jazz buff Bill Alburty had an idea: why not modify the KCTV tower at 31st and Grand into "a giant saxophone?" He still thinks it could work and has decided to pursue his vision anew.

"The modification would involve adding some structure to the tower," Alburty says, "mostly for holding the lights that would outline the saxophone. Also, an observation platform and possibly a restaurant could make it a major tourist attraction, much like the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. With Kansas City so well known for its jazz musicians, the Sax Tower would really make that connection complete."

KCTV vice president and general manager John Rose isn't so sure.

"Over the years there has been talk of the different things that could be done to the tower, but our engineers say that, structurally, it just isn't feasible to add any more weight to it. Also, digital TV is coming in and we need to see what modifications will be needed for that. (Alburty's) drawings are pretty neat, though."

In the meantime, Alburty remains undeterred.

"The arch has had a tremendous economic effect for the city of St. Louis. And I can envision the same kind of success for Kansas City with the Sax Tower.

"Plus, the existing tower is half a saxophone already!"
