MONTEREY JAZZ FESTIVAL, Forty Legendary Years by William Minor and Bill Wishner $40.00; 176 pp., illustrated, indexed; ISBN 1-883318-40-8, from: Angel City Press, 2118 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 880, Santa Monica, CA 90403 Since two unknown tintype cameramen preserved images of Professor Tony Jackson and Buddy Bolden's New Orleans jazz band around the term of the century, photographers have been intrigued by jazz musicians as subjects for their lens artistry. The lure continues to this day. David Stone Martin's vintage drawings and superstar/jazz fan Clint Eastwood's insightful foreword set the scene for Monterey Jazz Festival, Forty Legendary Years. From the opening four color gatefold pages, it merges 165 works by two dozen ace photographers with compelling text that documents four decades of the world's oldest ongoing jazz festival. Since its modest beginning in 1958, the Monterey Jazz Festival has featured the world's greatest artists. Most of them are seen here in brilliant duotone prints carefully selected by photography editor Bill Wishner. A dual cross reference by page number and alphabetical list identifies each of the camera artists. William Minor's research and interviews with scores of participants furnished perceptive background material for his flowing observations of the performers and the performances. Designer Jeff Darnall's artistic layout weaves the words and photos into an attractive visual narrative on large 9 by 12 inch pages. This attractive merger of pictures, data and design creates a loving tribute to the festival's founders, jazz critic Ralph J. Gleason and disc jockey Jimmy Lyons. The book includes a concise chronological listing of the stellar jazzmen that appeared each year from 1958 through 1997. Like the event it commemorates, Monterey Jazz Festival, Forty Legendary Years is a class act. -- Floyd Levin RETURN TO AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 1998 MAIN INDEX ------------------------------------------------------------------------ © Kansas City Jazz Ambassadors 1996-2001.
