by Russ Dantzler "Statesmen of Jazz" Live Up To Name In Japan "Respected leaders" and "promoters of the public good" are parts of dictionary entries under "Statesmen." Wilma Dobie, a founding member of the American Federation of Jazz Societies, member of the Overseas Press Club for nearly twenty years and president of the Overseas Jazz Club, bestowed this worthy name upon this all-star band. In September, the Statesmen lived up to their moniker with their first tour outside this country (see the October/November JAM) that featured three spectacular shows in Japan. Dobie and I both went along as part of the support team. I'm happy to report that the Statesmen of Jazz were invited to return in 1998... before they'd even departed!
