Oops!
I really enjoyed meeting Gregg Ottinger at the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival in Washington D.C. last May. He's a wonderful guy and very dedicated to jazz, JAM, and all other good things.

However there were a couple of things in his coverage of my participation ("KC/DC", JAM, June/July '97) that need clarification.

Although I'm certainly indebted one hundred fold to Gary Sivils, the Gary of whom I spoke vis a vis Down Beat was Gary Shivers, the fellow who preceded me and who made it possible for me to become Down Beat's Kansas City correspondent.

And regarding my blindfold test for pianists, it is Bill Evans (not Gil) who I pit against Joanne Brackeen, Bill being the lyrical pianist, Joanne more contemporary. As I pointed out at the workshop, the guys always guess that it's Joanne who's the guy and Bill who's the fem.

Otherwise, many thanks to Gregg and to JAM for a wonderful article!

Sincerely,
Carol Comer

(A better editor would have spotted those two things. Sorry, Carol! -- MM)

Pat Fan
Hallo people of the "JAM"
I am interested in all Pat Metheny stuff, such as interviews, articles, commentaries... Is it possible to find such material?

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

(A good place to start is the JAM website at http://www.kansascity.com/kcjazz. There you will find a "Q&A" with Pat from June of '95 plus several other relevant links. -- MM)

Enjoyed The Crawl
I finally made it to the Jazz Pub Crawl after several years of intending to but missing it. I really enjoyed it despite the lack of higher profile KC performers. I was also very impressed with how well it was organized (bus route system, variety of performers). The only disappointment was that the buses stopped running at midnight. Kind of embarrassing, actually.

It would be nice if there were a Pub Crawl once a month throughout the summer! I'll be there next year for sure
