Remember some years ago seeing bumper stickers that proclaimed "The Big Bands Are Back" -- but you seriously doubted it? Well, they've been back for some years now and, just in case you didn't realize it, this recent CD is a terrific reminder.

Produced and recorded right here in Kansas City, the release features many of the area's most outstanding players. Over half the tunes (7 of 11) were written and/or arranged by Dan Gailey, director of the jazz program at the University of Kansas and producer of this CD. There are also two arrangements each from Chuck Tumlinson, Director of Jazz Studies at Washburn University, and Dave Aaberg, Director of Jazz Studies at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg.

Besides featuring top-notch arrangements, great ensemble work and first class soloists, the release also boasts one vocal track each from two of Kansas City's outstanding vocalists (each now nationally known through their own recordings), Karrin Allyson and Kevin Mahogany.

The program includes four Dan Gailey originals: "Revenge Of The Cow," "The Cheese That Time Forgot," "Return Of The Mid-Brain Revivalists," and "Skydance." The other three arrangements by Dan are: "There Will Never Be Another You" by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren and featuring Kevin's vocal, Rick Margitza's composition titled "Widow's Walk," and Cole Porter's well known standard "I Concentrate On You," featuring Karrin's vocal. Chuck Tumlinson's contributions are: Irving Berlin's classic "What'll I Do" and Chuck's original "Yes I Do." Rounding out the program are Dave Aaberg's arrangements of "Midge's Late Valentine" by tenor sax veteran Don Lanphere, and the Larry Morey-Frank Churchill standard from Snow White, "Someday My Prince Will Come."

This is an outstanding big band CD and leader/co-producer Mike McGraw can be very proud of the finished product. I know it was hard work gathering all the players and music for the recording, but all I can say to Mike is: "How about a Volume Two?"

I highly recommend this recording and hope JAM readers will add it to their collections.

For The Love of Bossa Nova

by J.P. Makus

The sensuous and romantic rhythms made famous from the Bay of Guanabara and its neighboring beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, and Barra da Tijuca subtly touched North American shores in the late 50's and early 60's. Composers such as Bonfa, Gilberto, Jobim and Almeida caressed the hearts of many by offering melodies foreign in origination, yet musically universal. "Manha De Carnival" from the film Black Orpheus and evergreens like "Garota De Ipanema (The Girl From Ipanema)," "Meditacao (Meditation)," "Samba De Uma So (One Note Samba)," "Insensatez (How Insensitive)," "Samba Da Sahra (Sarah's Samba)," and "Corcavado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)" soon became standards in both pop and jazz.

The mass appeal even led to the adaptation of English lyrics for these songs which, to this day, is rather unique and anomalous to the time period. Cross-culturally, these new melodies made an impact and the term "bossa nova" became a household word to express this form of music as well as becoming a description for the Brazilian beat. And heat! According to James T. Maher in his liner notes on a 1963 album featuring Stan Getz and Laurindo Almeida, these were "songs that were often curiously spare and simple (treacherous word)... songs that made one test the word 'pretty' after long disuse. 'Bossa nova' someone in Brazil said, and the label stuck. Both the music and the label stuck. Both the music and the label traveled north, where the label was about as revealing as a baggage sticker..."

So, here you go. A list of records to get you started. The time frame is early to mid 1960's. Many of these albums should be reissued and available on CD. (The Getz/Gilberto session is a classic.)
